Medals

Reference:5690 Visit of Frederick IV of Denmark to Florence, 1708

Large bust of Frederick IV to right, armoured, draped and wearing a long wig. /

A monumental representation of a River God- the Arno, with the city of Florence and Duomo beyond.

By A. Montauti.

Bronze, cast. 102 mm.

Condition: Very Fine

Notes:

Very fine, with a pleasing even brown patination; minor marks, but a sharp and pleasing cast.

A magnificent high baroque medal; in its sculptural representation, the reverse is particularly evocative of the period, with Florence an important Grand Tour destination.

The Langheit specimen, which was a somewhat inferior specimen, with a large hole punched through the more central portion of the field, was sold in London for £2300 (plus 22% buyer's premium) in 2003 (Morton & Eden, 20 May 2003, Lot 744).
