Wooden draughts piece commemorating the Siege of Vienna, 1683 Troops of the Ottoman empire and a battery of cannon, their tented positions each designated with a crescent, lay siege to the city of Vienna, lying beyond. An equestrian engagement between the helmeted and uniformed troops of the Holy Roman empire and those of the Ottoman empire, who are put to flight. Wood, 57 mm. (2.3 inches). Extremely fine and attractive, with a fine, dark patina. Sorry this item is sold. Notes: The siege of Vienna was commanded by Kara Mustafa, brother-in-law of Ahmed Kiuprili, the grand vizar. It lasted from 17 July - 12 September, and was eventually relieved by a united German and Polish army under Charles of Lorraine and John Sobieski.
