Landing of William III at Torbay: Escape of James II to France

46. Landing of William III at Torbay: Escape of James II to France, 1688
William III of Orange, trampling upon the serpent of discord, is greeted by Britannia, who wears a triple crown. To the right is an orange tree decorated with the armorial shield of Britain; to the left, James II escaping with Father Petre, who holds the infant James, Prince of Wales, a windmill in the child's hand.
Boats landing troops near a fortified harbour; a vast fleet on the distant horizon.
49 mm. (2 inches), silver, by R. Arondeaux.
Good very fine, attractively toned.
Sorry this item is sold.
References: Medallic Illustrations I, 639 / 65; Eimer 298; N. Woolf, The Medallic Record of the Jacobite Movement, 7:1.
Notes: The object of the invitation to William III was to defend England from King James II's attempts to establish Popery. James was believed to have acted on the advice of Father Petre, his confessor.
The vignette depicting their flight, together with the infant Prince James, had, on an earlier die, only contained the escaping figures of Father Petre and a monk.
