 33. Marriage between King Charles II and Catherine, 1662 Bust of Charles II, left, laureate, his hair long, flowing in front, wearing scale armour and drapery tied in a knot on the shoulder, below which is a lion's mask. Legend around proclaiming him king of Britain, France and Ireland. Bust of Catherine, right, her hair gracefully and compactly arranged with a string of pearls; her gown fastened with a brooch on the shoulder. Legend around proclaiming her queen of Britain, France and Ireland. Silver, 43 mm. (1.7 inches), by John Roettiers. Extremely fine and attractively toned. Sorry this item is sold. References: Medallic Illustrations I, 489, 113; Van Loon II, 471; Eimer 224. Notes: Catherine of Braganza was the daughter of John IV, King of Portugal. Her union with Charles II was seen as of great importance to the two countries, helping to found the Indian empire and establish the independence of Portugal. This would explain the unusually large issue of twenty or so different medals and badges produced to mark the occasion. This particular medal, perhaps the most attractive of those made, is believed to be that cited by John Waller, a Royalist poet and court favourite of Charles II, in his poetic commentary on the union, 'The Golden Medal': 'Our guard upon the royal side! On the reverse, our beauty's pride! Here we discern the frown and smile; the force and glory of our isle'. John Roettiers was a prolific medallist producing a number of medals of the Stuarts in the second half of the seventeenth century.
