Queen Henrietta Maria and Mary of Modena, Duchess of Albany and York

361. Queen Henrietta Maria and Mary of Modena, Duchess of Albany and York, c.1680
A fine pair of ivory portrait plaques: one with
the bust of Henrietta Maria, right, and the other with the bust of Mary of Modena, Duchess of Albany and York, left.
85 x 55 mm. (3.40 x 2.20 inches).
Extremely fine and very attractive.
Notes: Queen Henrietta Maria (1609-69) was the consort of King Charles I. Mary of Modena (1658-1718) married James, Duke of York in 1673, when she was styled Duchess of Albany and York, becoming Queen on his coronation in 1685. James was the son of Charles I and Henrietta Maria, making the relationship between the two sitters mother-in-law and daughter-in-law.
The date of Queen Henrietta Maria's death and the titles accorded Mary of Modena, and situated behind her bust, provide a narrow window with which to place the carving of these two ivory plaques.
