 557. Defeat of the Duke of Monmouth, 1685 Armoured bust of James, Duke of Monmouth, right. A Roman soldier attempts to tear open the jaws of a lion. Probably by Jan Smeltzing. Silver. 50 mm. (1.95 inches) in diameter. Extremely fine and attractively toned. Sorry this item is sold. References: Medallic Illustrations, I, 613/22; v. Loon III/307; Eimer 277. Notes: A rare medal. James Edward Scott, Duke of Monmouth and Buccleuch (1649-85) was the natural son of Charles II and Lucy Walters. His claim to the throne ended in defeat at the Battle of Sedgemoor on 6 July 1685 and he was executed on Tower Hill nine days later.
