 559. King James II and the Religious State of England, 1688 A pedestal inscribed BRITANNIA supports a dove, chalice, wafer, Bible, mitre and cap of liberty; above, a hand from heaven holds a scroll inscribed with a text representing a letter from Caspar Fagel. A large dog wearing a rosary and standing next to a short column; a book in its mouth, and others around, all marked with initials. By Jan Smeltzing. Silver. 58 mm. (2.35 inches) in diameter. Good very fine, a few surface marks, attractively toned. Sorry this item is sold. References: Medallic Illustrations, I, 620/35; v.Loon III/337. Notes: A very rare medal, bristling with symbolism relative to religious and sovereign affairs of State. Ex.
