 640. Pablo Sarasate, 1905 A uniface portrait plaque of Pablo Sarasate, his draped bust three-quarters right, his head almost facing. Below, a violin bow, held by a hand on the extreme right; to left, a flower is delicately held by the thumb and forefinger of another hand. By Franz Kounitzky. Copper, cast. Rectangular, 78 x 86 mm. (3.15 x 3.45 inches). Extremely fine, attractive and with a most striking portrait. Sorry this item is sold. References: Niggl 1755. Notes: Pablo Sarasate (1844-1908), Spanish composer and violin virtuoso. This enigmatic portrait of Sarasate is very much in keeping with the work of Franz Kounitzky, an outstanding medallist of the Viennese school, and along with Anton Scharff and Emil Fuchs, one of its premier exponents. On this rare piece, the sensitivity required in the handling of the violin bow finds parallels in the flower, and the delicacy with which this, too, is being held. Kounitzky produced a number of portraits medals, among them those of Darwin, Schumann, Brahms, Mahler and Tolstoi (for an image of this piece, see the Archive page of the website under the year 1910, item # 583). He exhibited some of his work at the New York International Medallic Exhibition in 1910. Would you please note that you are in the ARCHIVE page of the website, where all sold items are placed.
