Franz von Sickingen

786. Franz von Sickingen, 1521
Bust of Franz von Sickingen, to left, draped and wearing a hat.
An ornate escutcheon of arms.
By Joachim Deschler.
Silver-gilt. 37 mm. (1.45 inches) in diameter. 39.80 grammes in weight.
Nearly very fine, with much of its original gilding present.
Sorry this item is sold.
References: Habich 1666.
Notes: The top edge of this medal shows the merest hint of once having been mounted, perhaps with a loop or suspension clasp. Traces of an inked inventory number, from an old collection, can be found in the obverse field, to left.
Franz von Sickingen (1481-1523), a German knight who inherited considerable estates on the Rhine. He assisted in the election of Charles V as emperor in 1519, under whom, as stated in the legend on this medal, he served as imperial chamberlain and councillor. He promoted Reformation and in 1522 headed a league for its advancement throughout the German states. He was eventually defeated by an alliance of the archbishop of Trier, the landgrave of Hesse and the count palatine of the Rhine.
