Cesare d'Este, Duke of Modena

931. Cesare d'Este, Duke of Modena, c.1610
Draped and armoured bust of Cesare d'Este, to right, and wearing the chain and order of the Golden Fleece. CAESAR DVX MVT. REG: PRIN: PROVIN: CARFAGN: FRINIAN CARPIET.C.
Armorial shield of Cesare d'Este, surmounted with a ducal coronet and encircled by the chained order of the Golden Fleece. NOBILITAS ESTENSIS.
Unsigned.
Silver-gilt, cast. Oval, 49 x 35 mm. (1.95 x 1.4 inches). Suspension loop.
Very fine, and with a most attractive pale-lemon gilding and tone.
Sorry this item is sold.
References: Seemingly unpublished.
Notes: A rare and charming medal, the authorship of which is not known. Cesare d'Este (1562-1628), was the son of Alfonso, marquis of Montecchio. In 1597, he succeeded his cousin Alfonso II, duke of Ferrara, becoming duke of Modena, Reggio and Carpi, as indicated by the legend on the obverse of this medal.
