 978. George Brown, Stone Seal Engraver, Dublin, c.1810 A seal impression and trade label of George Brown, seal engraver to His Excellency, The Lord Lieutenant. 3 Fourness Street, Dublin. The inside lid of the circular wooden box carries a wonderful classical scene of warriors and horsemen, within an oval fine seal impression. 49 mm. (1.9 inches) in diameter. Extremely fine. Sorry this item is sold. References: Forrer VII / 125. Notes: George Brown is listed in Forrer as having been born in 1786 and having died in 1827. He exhibited impressions of seals and engraved gems at various exhibitions in Dublin between 1813 and 1821. This is a rare and early boxed trade label of an Irish seal engraver. There is a screw fitting, in which the two halves fit beautifully together.
