1065. Ludwig, Prince Regent of Bavaria, 1913 Large uniface portrait plaque of Prince Ludwig of Bavaria, his bust to right, uniformed, and wearing orders and medals. By Hugo Kaufmann (signed on truncation: HUGO KAUFMANN 1913). Copper. 230 mm. (9.2 inches) in diameter. Extremely fine, with an attractive even, medium-brown patina; and a cast of outstanding quality. Sorry this item is sold. References: Forrer VII, 495; cf. Daniel Friedenberg, 'Jewish Minters and Medallists' (1976), p. 84-85. Notes: Hugo Kaufmann (1868-1919) was a prominent Munich sculptor, who also executed a number of portrait plaques and medals. The detail in this portrait of Prince Ludwig is rendered with a most delicate and sensitive hand. Would you please note that you are in the ARCHIVE page of the website, where all sold items are placed. For items that are still available, please go to the menu opposite and click on MEDALS & MEDALLIC ART. On the deposition of his cousin Otto in 1913, Ludwig (1845-1921) became emperor of Bavaria as Ludwig III, but abdicated in 1918. He was the last reigning emperor of the house of Wittelsbach.
