1231. King Charles II and Catherine of Braganza, Marriage Medal, 1662 Quarter-length busts of King Charles II and Queen Catherine, facing each other. The head of the King laureate, and his bust draped and armoured; the hair of Catherine swept up and plaited, a crown perched at the back of her head, her bust draped. Full-length figure of Fame, advancing, holds a long trumpet, with which she proclaims the royal marriage, a sprig of laurel held up in her left hand. By George Bowers. Silver-gilt. 53.50 mm. (2.15 inches) in diameter. Extremely fine, the gilding fresh and attractive, a nick in the field behind Catherine and scratches above Fame. Sorry this item is sold. References: Medallic Illustrations, I, 480/90; Eimer 223. Notes: A wonderful double-portrait medal with great eye appeal. The marriage of Charles II and Catherine united the royal house of Stuart with that of the Portuguese royal house of Braganza.
