Conjoined busts, left, of the Prince Regent, Francis II (of Austria), Alexander I (Russia), and Frederick William III (Prussia). Above,  Apollo drives a quadriga; around is a continuous border of allegorical and mythological allusions. /

Victory advancing left guides the equestrian figures of the Duke of Wellington and Marshal Blucher. Around is a border illustrating the Battle of the Giants.

Edge inscribed: WATERLOO JUNE 18, 1815.

By Messrs Pinches, after Benedetto Pistrucci.

Silver (119 grammes). 63 mm.

Condition: Extremely fine

Notes:

Closely based on the design for Pistrucci's celebrated medal for Waterloo, produced in the late 1840s and only in electrotype form, this silver medal was struck by Messrs John Pinches in a limited edition (the edge is hallmarked, as well as being stamped JP and numbered 92). In 1990, the Royal Mint produced a 175th Waterloo anniversary medal, which is also closely based on Pistrucci's design (Eimer 2166).
