Notes:

Theodore Spicer Simson (1871-1929), sculptor and medallist, born Le Havre and of English parents. Studied in Paris at the Ecoles des Beaux Arts in 1890. Exhibited widely in London, Paris, New York and Brussels, producing a group of uniface portrait medals of people within the artistsic, intellectual and social milieu. His work is remarkable in achieving fine casts with a realistic sense of texture, but in very low relief. The small group being currently offered have remained together in an old collection, and such was their acquisition that they may well have been amongst those exhibited at the Brussels salon in 1910.
