Notes: Jean Baptiste Charcot (1867-1936), French scientist and polar explorer, who in 1908-10 surveyed and mapped the west coast of the Antarctic on the Pourquoi Pas? In 1936, Charcot attempted to reach Greenland, but his ship foundered off the coast of Iceland and he drowned.
