Medals

Reference:4593 King George III Portrait Relief, c. 1770

Bust of George III to right, hair tied behind, wearing a buttoned coat with decorative border and the sash of an order. GEORGE III KING OF GREAT BRITAIN ETC. Reverse: En cavo. Bronze. 55 mm.

Condition: Nearly extremely fine.

Notes: Other than the apparent difference in diameter, the example described by Laurence Brown in British Historical Medals would appear to be one and the same medal as that being offered. The portrait, which is in high relief and struck on a thin flan, does not immediately suggest the hand of a known medallist. The work, however, is of high quality and its importance lies in presenting a hitherto unknown medallic image of King George III.

References: BHM 140 (RRR), listed as being 58 mm. in diameter.
