Medals

Reference:5533 Pierre Jeannin, Privy Councillor and Superintendant of Finances, 1618

Large bust of Pierre Jeannin to right, wearing magistrates clothes. Legend: PETRVS IENNIN. REG. CHRIST. A. SECR. CONS. ET. SAC. AERA. PRAEF. A raised circular beaded border.

By Guillaume Dupre.

Bronze, cast. 188 mm.

Condition: Very Fine

Notes:

Pierre Jeannin (c.1540-1623), trained as a lawyer and became President of the Parlement of Dijon in 1581. He undertook numerous dipplomatic missions and was appointed Superintendent of Finances after the death of Henry IV. He had an interest in medals and antiquities.

The medal is an old cast and has a most attractive and rich medium to dark-brown patina, with much detail in the portrait present. The diameter of the medal excluding the rim, and measured from one edge of the beaded border to another, is 182 mm., which approximates with examples listed by Jones in the Bibliotheque Nationale.

The medal is provenanced to an old French house.
