Reference:4047 'Archaeologie', c. 1900

A three-quarter length female figure of Archaeologia, left, who gazes at a vase held in her right hand; her left hand rests on a field hammer, and around are objects and other archaeological evidence. By Seraphim-Emile Vernier. Bronzed electrotype, with a matt finish. Rectangular, 215 x 150 mm. (8.6 x 6 inches).

Condition: Extremely fine, minor surface marks.

Notes: A most attractive Art Nouveau plaquette and a wonderful evocation of Archaeology. The sensitive handling of the lettering and composition, in which Vernier employs a soft-focus technique, brings them forth, as if having been buried in the mists of time. In so doing, he does not lose sight of prevailing tastes of the new art, in which he was a skilled and an original practitioner. Seraphim-Emile Vernier (1852-1927), sculptor, medallist and chaser, and a leading exponent in Paris of Art Nouveau on the medal. He began exhibiting at the Salon in 1876 and won an honourable mention in 1886. He was represented at the International Exhibition of Medallic Art in New York in 1910, and 'Archaeologia' was included in the exhibit.
