Reference:5303 Rheims Cathedral: Destruction by Fire during the First World War, 1914

Exterior view of Rheims Cathedral engulfed in fire; a grief-stricken figure above.

By Henri Huegenin.

Bronze. 85 x 35 mm.

Condition: Extremely fine

Notes:

The cathedral was largely destroyed by German shellfire in september 1914, during the opening engagements of the First World War. Images of the cathedral in ruins were used for propaganda purposes against Germany's deliberate destruction of buildings rich in national and cultural heritage.
