Bust of Crawford, right. 88 mm. cast, bronze, by Karl Friedrich Voigt.

Condition: Extremely fine and a very sharp cast, with an attractive patina.

Notes: Thomas Crawford (1813-57), was an eminent New York-born American sculptor, who studied with Thorwaldsen in Rome, where he lived for much of his life. Examples of his work can be seen in Washington, Boston and New York. Would you please note that you are in the ARCHIVE page of the website, where all sold items are placed. Karl Friedrich Voigt (1800-74) was a sculptor, medallist and gem-engraver, who was born in Berlin, but worked principally in Munich and Rome. He was a prolific engraver of coinage and medal dies, but also produced a series of cast uniface portrait plaques of notable figures, of which this is one, each produced in very small numbers. It is probable that Voigt was given a sitting for this portrait medal by Crawford, the two men having known one another well socially.
