Notes:

The medal is accompanied by its orginal gilt-embossed card, the first such seen, on which is inscribed the name of 'Pte P. Whelan, 1st Connaught Rangers'. The roll of individuals entitled to the South African Medal lists Private Whelan (no. 1807) as having been invalided (the paper work accompanies the medal, as does the original fitted red case, its top lid detached).
